Federal Minister of Education and Vocational Training Shafqat Mahmoud announced on Twitter on Wednesday that private schools could teach additional materials and subjects as part of the Unified National Curriculum (SNC).

Minister Mahmoud said the SNC has mandated minimum standards of teaching as the core curriculum and does not prohibit private schools from teaching other materials or additional subjects. In addition, private schools are free to use books in accordance with the national curriculum policy.

The decision comes days after the Federal Minister ordered a comprehensive consultation process on national education policy by 2021.

While chairing the Education Ministry meeting, Minister Mahmoud said that all actors in the education sector should be involved for consultation.

While private schools have welcomed the allowance, education experts have criticized the move as a decision allegedly made under pressure from the education mafia.

One expert said the government was laying the groundwork for the failure of the new system by allowing private schools to teach from books of their choice.

œIf you allow private schools to use NSC-compliant books, you are actually laying the groundwork for the failure of the new system. Apart from that, it also shows that you succumb to pressure from the education mafia groups. The government is unable to carry out this ", said the expert. Reuters
