Microsoft Teams will now be 50 percent more energy efficient

In everyday work, Microsoft Teams is probably one of the more resource-intensive applications. That's why Microsoft is constantly working to improve its efficiency.

In recent updates, Microsoft has significantly improved the optimization of Teams software. The application is now said to require much less resources. This, in turn, results in lower power consumption and lower CPU usage, among other things. So far, Microsoft Teams has received the most criticism for its performance, the Golem.de portal wrote.

Microsoft itself has been working to improve Teams' continuous performance since June 2020. Meanwhile, energy demand is said to have fallen by 52 percent. Mobile devices in particular can benefit from more energy-efficient programs, as mostly active cooling is less noisy and battery life is longer.

To achieve the current performance of Teams, Microsoft has created special test environments, each of which can test individual components of the software separately. In October 2020, for example, only the CPU load caused by the camera on and related optimization algorithms, such as automatic white balances and exposures, was examined.

Further improvements were made later, especially in the display of multiple video signals. For example, movies are now rendered directly instead of being generated within the web layer. In addition, Teams currently outsources certain rendering tasks to the graphics unit, be it a dedicated graphics card or a GPU integrated directly into the SoC.
