How to teach students to set goals and confidently achieve them

We teach children to make a plan and follow it, overcome difficulties and rationally assess the situation

Why are some people successful and others not? In all, the day lasts 24 hours! However, some people manage to "turn the mountains upside down" in a day, while others only have to scroll through the Facebook feed. What does success depend on? Not always from innate skills and talents! And first of all from the way of thinking and the ability to set goals.

How to encourage children to set goals

Ask students what they dream of. And how do they understand the difference between the concept of "dream" and "goal"? Explain that a dream can remain both unrealizable and a reality. It directly depends on the ability to set priorities and plan your time for the near and long term.

Consciously setting goals and achieving them is a skill you can and should learn! We offer two effective tricks that will help you bring up today's students successful individuals, and your students - to learn to systematically realize their dreams.

Wish map as a way to visualize dreams

This technique will be useful for working with junior high students. Let the children fantasize about what they dream of and what they want in the near future. Invite students to write about their dreams and desires on a separate piece of paper, and draw a portrait or nickname in the center. Ask the children to think and answer the following questions in writing:

  • What would you like to learn by the end of the month / spring / school year and more? For example, wrestle 30 times, win a district dance competition, learn to draw airplanes and more.
  • What would you like to do in a similar time frame? For example, take part in a school concert, visit the zoo with your parents, end the school year, launch your own YouTube channel and more.

Invite everyone to think about what effort they need to make and what to do to achieve their goal.

Your desires should be visualized! Invite students to design their wish list with bright pictures, stickers, and more. You can also fill in the appropriate cells on a pre-printed bright articaler and specify your wishes according to areas of life.

Invite students to display brightly designed maps of their desire to hang them on a wall in a prominent place at home and to analyze for themselves how they are moving toward their goals.

SMART method for conscious pursuit of the goal

SMART is a technique of thorough planning that will help middle and high school students not only understand what they want, but also understand a clear sequence of actions that will lead them to the desired goal. With the help of this technique you can plan to achieve global goals, and small, intermediate.

Invite students to think about what goal each of them wants to achieve in the near future and to analyze what they need to do by answering the questions according to the key goal criteria.

SMART is an abbreviation that includes the components of conscious goal achievement.

  • What exactly do you need to do? Who will do it and where?
  • What indicates that the goal has been achieved?
  • Attainable (reach). What is needed to achieve the goal? What is already there, and what resources or knowledge will be needed? Where exactly can you get the necessary knowledge or skills?
  • To what extent is this goal in demand now? Doesn't the result of its achievement contradict other more important goals?
  • Time-bound. In what terms the purpose should be reached?

The use of SMART technology allows you to set goals not at random, but consciously and independently look for ways to achieve them, purposefully taking specific steps.

If the goal is more global, for example, admission to the university in the specialty "Cartography and Geodesy", the student should explain what "steps" -intermediate goals should consist of achieving the goal. So learn to distinguish between areas of current, near and far development.

Not only dreaming, but also setting goals and systematically achieving them - the necessary skills to become a successful person on the way to forming a successful personality. Having them, a person does not "go with the flow", but manages his own life, successfully overcomes any obstacles and realizes the most incredible dreams.
