History and cellular timeline since 1930

Today, mobile phones are part of the daily lives of most people on this planet and are a prime example of the dizzying speed of technological evolution.

If a person is asked how many times he unlocked his cell phone today, he probably doesn't remember, but he can also admit that he did it many times. Average: 110 times a day.

Cell phone history: from 1930 to today

  1. a) Portable radios

1938

Many people do not know that the mobile phone is contained in the first portable radios AM, SCR-194 and 195, ancestors. These models were made in the USA. Laboratories of engineering corps of forces.

Weighing approximately 25 pounds and spanning 5 miles, these walkie-talkies were widely used during World War II.

1940

Another development for military purposes, which can be considered a cellular antecedent, was the Motorola SCR-300 radio.

Although it weighed more (32 and 38 pounds) and had a shorter run (3 miles) than SCR-194 and 195, it was also popular with the Allies during World War II.

1942

In the same line of portable radios appears the first "handie talkie", SCR-536, developed by Motorola with a weight of 5 kilograms and a ground mileage of 1 mile, while in water its signal can reach 3 miles.

1946

This was the year when the first commercial mobile service appeared: the mobile communication system (MTS), developed by Bell System.

Weighed £ 80 and worked with limited call ranges available from AT&T, which cost up to $ 30 per month with additional call charges.

1956

Ten years after the introduction of the Bell System MTS, Ericsson Mobile System A (MTA) appeared, the first semi-automatic mobile car system to be sold in Sweden.

A year later, Du Mont's engineer, James A. Craig, demonstrated in the United States the first radiotelephone equipment that allows phone calls from returning vehicles to be retransmitted completely without the supervision of local telephone companies.

1964

As of this year, car owners with phones integrated in the United States have begun to see lighter cell phones, with buttons, but with low prices and with standardized service ..

  1. b) The advent of the cell phone

1973

The mobile phone comes out of the car thanks to DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage), with which former Motorola Vice President Martin Cooper made his first private phone call.

It was said that the device weighed 1.1 kg and its dimensions were 228.6x127x44.4 mm. The user was able to talk for 30 minutes, and it took almost 10 hours for his battery to fully charge.

In terms of connectivity, these first devices belong to the "Generación cero" (0G), because they do not have this ability.

1982

Nokia enters the mobile phone market and launches the first international mobile service, the first generation (1G) of mobile communications.

1983

Mobira Talkman appears, increasing the time available for conversations imposed by DynaTAC.

Motorola International 3200 appears as the first digital mobile phone to use 2G technology.

  1. c) Smart phones

We can say that from the decade of the 90's the race began to improve the design of phones and make them more portable so that any consumer can access them.

And at the end of the decade, multifunction phones appeared: games, calculator, clock, calendar, profile configuration and colors on the screen.

1993

Launches IBM Simon, mobile phone, pager, fax and PDA, which also includes a calendar, address book, clock, calculator, laptop, email, games and a touch screen with a QWERTY keyboard.

With the Nokia 9000 comes the first cell phone, which also includes mini-computer features, despite limited Internet access. It had an LCD screen and a full QWERTY keyboard, the first on a mobile phone.

In the same year, Nokia released its 3110, the most compact mobile phone.

Nokia is moving towards a nicer and more ergonomic design; with its model 8810 turns off the external antenna or heel antenna, and then launches other models with a sliding keyboard.

1999

Nokia is again innovating with its 3210 model, which allows you to send messages with pre-installed images; or 7110, the first cell phone to include wireless communication protocol (WAP) or something that is the same: Internet access for mobile users.

At that time, the Kyocera VP-201, the first cell for the built-in camera, also appeared.

  1. d) Phones and cameras

2010 - present

For the past 7 years, the manufacturers' challenge has focused on developing devices with a battery that lasts longer and with an elegant design that is light and thin.

In addition, Android technology has been in the north of many to allow the download of the most popular mobile applications on the market.

From the point of view of content producers in the world, there has also been a race to develop products that can be consumed from various devices, especially smartphones, as this connection mode today accounts for 75% of web traffic.
