In a recent podcast installment, search engine giant Gary Illyes revealed that the company's search index uses a tiered system that uses more expensive storage to index the most popular content faster. Google reveals more about how it contributes to fast search results.

According to Illyes, Google indexes content using three types of storage. RAM is the fastest and most expensive type of storage used by companies, followed by solid state drives (SSD), which are fast but too expensive, and hard drives (HDDs) for being the slowest and cheapest.

RAM is used to index documents that are frequently shown in search results, while the other two types of memory are used for content that is seen less frequently on the Google search engine.

For example, documents that we know can appear every second receive something very quickly. And RAM will be super fast. How part of our service index is in RAM. Then we have another level, for example for Solid -State drive because it is fast and not as expensive as RAM. But still not - most of the indexes won't be there.
