However, things took a bad turn when users soon realized that downloading a particular group of VPN apps made their browser redirect all their internet traffic from a normal website to a fake one. This made users instantly realize that something is wrong, and Microsoft was quickly given a deadline in which they quickly removed the application before it did any harm. The names of the VPN applications were Nord VPN, Ad guard VPN< Tunnel Bear VPN, The Great Suspender and Floating Player. All of these are named after famous and original VPNNs in order to fool the public. So, these VPNs were particularly hard to spot and find especially because they try and mimic the function of original extensions.

These extensions were five in amount and all of them have currently been removed by Microsoft from the Edge Store. These VPN extension s were not detected by the users™ local anti-virus as it was mimicking as an actual VPN app. While the extension did no actual harm to anyone™s computer, it is still dangerous to realize that it is possible for users to bypass the security set up by Microsoft and it can be completely ignored where an application with malicious purposes is directly installed in the user™s computer. This is not the first time where Microsoft was under fire for not having a good structure in terms of security and overall defense.

Fake VPN applications have always been an issue in the Microsoft Edge Store as the company has not been quick in removing applications that are malicious. Hopefully, now that the issue has garnered international attention Microsoft will take these issues into account and improve their security.
