DDR4 memory has already settled in our computers for good – we can find it in cheaper home sets, but also inefficient gaming configurations or strong workstations. DDR4 dice replaced the previous, slower generation DDR3. We know, however, that it will be their turn in the future – the newer, faster DDR5 standard is already on the horizon.

Which DDR4 RAM will be the best choice? We have prepared a RAM memory ranking that will help you make your decision. In our list, you will find both basic configurations for cheap computers and quick sets for more efficient gaming or work machines.

Which DDR4 memory to choose? It all depends on the computer …

The use of high-speed RAM speeds up the computer’s performance (especially in games) and has become the easiest way to increase CPU performance without overclocking the operating frequency of the cores. Of key importance here is not only the clock speed (MHz) but also the delay (CL). However, it is worth noting that not all configurations will properly handle all memories.

The processor plays a key role when choosing RAM – for example, the latest AMD Ryzen 5000 models support DDR4 modules up to around 4000 MHz well.

The latest processors have limited support for high-speed modules. For AMD Ryzen 5000 models, the maximum supported clock speed in synchronous mode is around 4000 MHz, for AMD Ryzen 3000 models it is around 3733 MHz, and for 11th generation Intel Core systems it is only 3600 MHz. Higher frequency modules will operate in asynchronous mode, which translates into the reduced performance of the memory subsystem.

We will not meet such a limitation in AMD Ryzen 5000G processors (with integrated graphics) and older 10th and 9th generation Intel Core models. You can successfully use faster modules here, which will allow you to get better performance (of course, you also have to pay extra for them, so they are often not a very profitable solution).

The motherboard is also of great importance when choosing memory – cheaper models for Intel processors strongly limit the frequency of RAM

It is also worth paying attention to the motherboard. While in the case of AMD platforms it is not a special limitation (fast RAM modules even support cheap A320 or A520 models), in the case of Intel it is of great importance. Overclocking RAM above the nominal value for the memory controller in the processor is possible only on the top Z models (eg Z590, Z490, Z390, Z370). And in the case of the latest platform also the cheaper H570 and B560. Basic models (eg H510, H470, B460) will limit the memory speed to the nominal one – depending on the model 2666, 2933, or 3200 MHz.

Glossary of terms

  • Memory capacity – the most important parameter regarding RAM. Currently, the most common size of RAM is 8 or 16 GB, which is more than enough for basic applications and fun (games). People using a computer for professional applications (CAD, 3D graphics, video) must take into account the demand by programs for much larger amounts of memory – a good idea will be to fill 32 GB or even more RAM capacity.
  • Frequency (clock speed) – the most important parameter that determines the performance of RAM. Of course, the concept of RAM memory performance is arbitrary, because in fact, we are only dealing with a temporary data storage that allows using the processing power of the processor to a greater or lesser extent. Faster RAM not only increases the performance of the entire hardware platform but can also speed up calculations of the CPU itself. It is worth remembering that the memory works at 2133 MHz by default, and a higher frequency can be set using the XMP profile.
  • Delays (timings) – RAM performance is largely determined by delays (timings), i.e. ranges of the duration of individual work cycles. Lower latency means faster access to RAM.
  • Two, three, and four-channel sets – by far most of the current computing platforms have dual-channel memory support. This means that the RAM controller receives data from two memory modules simultaneously (regardless of the number of memory banks). The exception here is the top platforms: AMD TR4 / sTRX4 and Intel LGA 2066, where a four-channel DDR4 RAM memory controller was used.
  • Heatsink – an element or set of elements that dissipate heat from the element with which it is in contact with the environment (e.g. air). The heat sink is a specially shaped body of metal (or its alloys) that conducts heat well with a developed surface on the airside, usually in the form of ribs, rods to increase heat transfer. The heat sinks are most often made of aluminum and copper. They are often decorated with an RGB LED backlight, which gives them a more interesting look.

Patriot Viper 4 Blackout 2x 4 GB 3200 MHz – cheap 8GB DDR4 RAM memory

Do you assemble a cheaper home or gaming set and take into account every zloty spent? Importantly, the memories are available at a very good price – a two-channel set with a capacity of 16 GB and a clock speed of 3200 MHz (CL16) costs about 75$. We recommend the cubes of the Polish manufacturer to build cheaper gaming computers. Larger memory capacity will translate into better comfort of work, and at the same time, it is a more future-proof solution.

However, we recommend that you add some cash to buy faster memory from our native manufacturer – a two-channel GOODRAM IRDM PRO set with a capacity of 16 GB and a clock speed of 3600 MHz (CL17) costs less than 102 $. This is a good proposition for building efficient computers with newer Intel Core and AMD Ryzen processors (especially if you put a lot of emphasis on the profitability of the equipment). The memories are distinguished by a massive, aluminum heat sink, which is decorated with an RGB LED backlight – the accessory will brighten the interior of the PC and give it a more interesting style. Which DDR4 memory will be the best choice? Contrary to appearances, the fastest does not necessarily mean the best. The GOODRAM IRDM PRO 2x 8 GB 3600 MHz CL18 set will work well in most configurations. The memories offer decent performance, and at the same time are available at a very good price.

If you expect better performance and can spend more cash, it is worth taking an interest in the G.Skill Trident Z RGB modules. The cubes offer significantly better performance. They can be additionally turned up (which should be checked e.g. in configurations with Ryzen 5000G processors). The design of the modules is also important – a massive radiator and RGB backlight give them a unique look.
